You'd think a new home, renovation, or addition would be comfortable, right? Well, so did we. But when we moved to Perth from the UK in 2007, we were in for a shock.

Picture this: We're in our brand-new Perth home… wearing Ugg boots, trackies, and woolly hats – just to stay warm. We'd spent good money and expected something special. Instead, we got a home that was freezing in winter, sweltering in summer, and never quite right.

When we investigated why Perth homes are so uncomfortable, the answer was clear: Australian building standards are dramatically different from what we were used to in the UK. For example:

Double glazing has been standard in the UK since the 1980s — Perth still uses single glazing, even in million-dollar homes.
Heating and cooling for 10 months of the year compared to just 3-4 in the UK, despite its colder climate.
Poor ventilation and inferior materials can lead to mould and air quality issues, affecting your health.
Gaps around windows and doors make it nearly impossible to maintain a consistent indoor temperature.
